The service was dismissed, and a godly lady in the congregation walked up to us to share something the Lord had put on her heart to tell us. In the process of her telling us, she told of how it was her grandson’s birthday. She said he had his own cupcake, and he was so excited about it… focused on that cupcake being his. And even though it was a larger-than-normal cupcake, what he didn’t realize was that his mom had also made a full-size cake. He was so caught up in the cupcake that he missed the much larger cake. She told us this as she encouraged us to believe for all that God wants to do for us.
We are all often a little bit like that young boy when it comes to seeing how much good God has in store for us as we walk with Him. We see “cupcake blessings” when He has a full sheet cake sitting there for us to enjoy. We are not limited to those few bites of life. He has in store for His kids something so much more… more than we can handle on our own… enough that we can have all we want and still have plenty to share with those around us.
It’s called abundance. Jesus said in John 10:10 that He came to give us life “… in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).” That’s not a cupcake life… that’s a sheet cake life. The Apostle Paul echoed that sentiment in Ephesians 3:20 when he wrote that God, “…is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams…”. That sounds like far more than a single cupcake type of God to me… It sounds like a God who definitely has a full sheet cake prepared for us… maybe with multiple layers… and extra frosting… and sprinkles on top.
In this week of Thanksgiving, I want to be sure to be grateful for the cupcake blessings I’ve already received… those good things that are right in front of me. But I also want to look around that blessing and be grateful for a Heavenly Father who is more than willing… in fact, is overjoyed… to bless me with full sheet cake blessings that are more than I can contain and need to be shared with those around me so that His love, and joy, and peace flow to others.
In other words… There’s more where that came from!
