Little Ears Are Listening

It would seem that we are going to have to work a lot harder at having private conversations around our house. Our oldest, Alex, apparently has the gift of supersonic, bionic-like hearing. The boys can be on the living room watching TV (currently The Brady Bunch  and Green Acres are big hits), and we can be in another room… not even speaking loudly… and Alex will come in the room where we are and ask, “Did you just say that we are going to…?”

We have resorted to saving conversations till after they have gone to sleep. We sometimes text. It’s tough to keeep a secret when someone is hanging on every word you say and can hear better than a whitetail deer.

I wonder… what if I listened to the Lord like that? What if I put forth the effort to tune my ears to His voice like Alex has to ours. What great “secrets” might I discover as He speaks? What truths would He reveal to me if He knew that I was so interested in hearing what He has to say?

Too often, I am distracted or just not tuned in enough. Oh, I spend time listening in my time alone with Him each day. And sure, I listen when I’m asking Him about a big decision. But I want to be like Alex and always have my antennas up and ears tuned to His voice to see what He might be saying.

Perhaps it’s time to turn down the volume on that TV show… or pull out the earbuds… or even minimize this blog for now… so that we can hear Him speak.

His words are life. Shhhhh… Let’s listen…

  1. Great word and great insight. Kids have an unkanny way of tuning in to our voice. Jesus said “My sheep know My voice.” Those we are really close to can be heard even in a crowd of loud people.
